Why Bother Grinding a Stump?
Because a stump is never just a stump. Left in the ground, it becomes:
- A sucker factory. Silver maple, ash, and locust stumps — most of what gets removed in Cleveland — resprout aggressively. Mow the shoots for years, or grind the stump once.
- A bug hotel next to your house. Rotting stumps feed carpenter ants and termites, and nobody wants that colony maturing twenty feet from the foundation.

How Stump Grinding Works
1. Quote it — often right over the phone
Stump grinding is the one tree service we can usually price from a photo and a tape measure: diameter at the widest point, ground level, plus what's nearby. Text a picture, get a number.
2. Grind 6–12 inches below grade
A carbide-toothed grinding wheel chews the stump into chips well below lawn level — deep enough to seed or sod over, and deeper on request if you're replanting or pouring. Surface roots that snake across the lawn get chased and ground too. Our machines fit through standard backyard gates, which matters on fenced Cleveland lots.
3. Backfill and finish
Standard finish is chips raked into the hole, mounded slightly to settle level. Want it planting-ready instead? We can haul the chip pile and backfill with topsoil for an add-on. Either way you're left with ground, not a crater.
Before any grind: underground utilities get located first — Ohio law's free call-811 service marks gas, electric, and water lines. Can You Plant a New Tree Where the Old One Stood?
Yes, with two adjustments. First, ask for a deeper grind — 12+ inches instead of the standard 6–8 — and topsoil backfill instead of chips, because fresh wood chips tie up nitrogen as they decompose and starve whatever you plant in them. Second, offset the new tree a few feet from the old stump's center, where the soil isn't laced with decaying root wood. And plant something better suited to the site than what died: if the borer took your ash, this is the moment to replace it with a species that has a future here — oak, tuliptree, hackberry, or a disease-resistant elm all handle Cleveland clay. Replacing a dead ash with a fast-growing silver maple is how the last generation created this generation's removal bills.
Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
Full excavation — digging the entire root ball out — is rarely worth it for a homeowner: it costs multiples of grinding and leaves a crater. Grinding removes everything you'll ever see or mow over; the deep roots left behind simply rot in place harmlessly. The exception is construction — if a foundation, addition, or driveway is going where the tree was, excavation may be required, and that's really a lot clearing conversation.
